Alerts: stay informed about the birds you have seen

With alerts you get a notification when something happens to a bird you have observed. For example when someone else sees it far away, when it is seen again after a long time, or when it is reported dead.

You need to be logged in. You can only set alerts for birds you have observed yourself or as a co-observer.

How you are notified

Notifications are not sent by e-mail. You find them on the website:

  • After logging in you see a message with the number of unread notifications, with a link to them.
  • My alerts (in the menu) shows all notifications you have received. You can filter them and mark them as read.

Where to set alerts

  • Alerts for one bird: open the life history of the bird and click alerts (bell icon). You can also use the bell button in the list of birds.
  • Followed birds: an overview of all birds for which you have set alerts.
  • Global alerts: alerts that apply to all birds you have observed or co-observed, without having to enable them per bird. Manage them via followed birds → manage.

Good to know

  • Your own observations never trigger an alert. You only hear about sightings by others.
  • Newly matched to a bird: when your observation is the first one ever linked to a bird, you get a notification automatically, without setting an alert.
  • Changing a value: the distance, date, number of months or percentage is set when you enable the alert. To change it, disable the alert and enable it again with the new value.
  • Late entries: observations that are more than 12 months old when they are entered do not trigger the date, offspring, not seen, old bird and reported dead alerts.
  • Timing: notifications are created automatically, usually within a few minutes after an observation has been entered.
