In this project, Sanderlings are fitted with colour rings at many places along the East Atlantic Flyway, from their breeding grounds in the high arctic Greenland to their wintering areas in West Africa. Observations of colour-ringed Sanderlings are used to study how well the birds survive from year to year and through the seasons, what drives changes in their numbers, when they migrate, how they use different habitats, and their lives outside the breeding season. The work is coordinated by Aarhus University (Denmark) and the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ, Netherlands), together with a large international team of co-workers. Each Sanderling gets four colour rings (two on each leg) and a flag, in different colour combinations, so that individual birds can be recognized in the field.
