Sanderlings of the East Atlantic flyway are colour-ringed between their breeding grounds in northeast Greenland and the most southerly non-breeding locations in Namibia. The research focuses on annual and seasonal survival probabilities of sanderlings using different migration strategies, the timing of migration, winter ecology and (breeding) behaviour. The research is conducted by the University of Groningen (the Netherlands) and the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) in close collaboration with a large international team of co-workers. The project is coordinated with the International Wader Study Group. Since 2002, more than 6.000 sanderlings have been colour-ringed. All sanderlings have been ringed with four colour-rings (two on each tarsus) and a flag of different colours.
